Jamaal Rolle of Nassau Bahamas was born to Harry Rolle, an artist and bronze sculptor, and to Judy Rolle, a conch shell artist, and says his family of 12 siblings all have artistic abilities. "I draw because there is hardly anything in life that is better to do," said Rolle. "My motivation is fueled by life itself. To awake and smell the freshness of the air each morning and see the sun rise to another glorious day is my inspiration." Rolle has been a professional artist since 2001, but said he's been freelancing since grade school. "My first paid portrait was actually a mischievous sketch of my math teacher that I doodled in the same class," he said. When the teacher discovered the sketch by mistake, instead of scolding him as expected, he laughed and bought it from him for $10; telling him that if this is what he wanted to do for a living...

JAMAAL ROLLE - BAHAMAS Jamaal Rolle is a 24-year old portrait artist, born and raised in Nassau, Bahamas. His father is a well-known Bahamian artist and bronze sculptor named Harry Rolle. He is the sixth child of an artistic family of 12. Ever since he was a little kid, he has loved to draw and exhibited artistic ability. In fact, during his high school years, his math teacher once caught him creating a funny caricature drawing of that teacher in the middle of a lesson. Instead of punishing Jamaal, the teacher paid him for the drawing. This was his first sale as a portrait artist. After graduating from high school, Jamaal began working with Bahamian Junkanoo pioneer, Paul Knowles, who instilled in him a good understanding about matching colors and the importance of detail. During the Democratic presidential debates, Jamaal was inspired by Barack Obama's powerful speeches and started paying close attention to the U.S. elections. He considers the late Tim Russert an inspiration and he listened intently to the opinions he shared during his news broadcasts. Jamaal points out that the main industry in the Bahamas is tourism and his country's economic well-being relies heavily upon U.S. tourists. Obama filled Jamaal with a sense of hope that inspired him to do an oil portrait on Super Tuesday. He displays this portrait at the location where he works in downtown Nassau and it has received heavy attention from the thousands of American tourist that pass by on a daily basis, including Maria Shriver. BAHAMA FOR OBAMA The large majority of Bahamians began to become passionate about Barack Obama. Jamaal started a "Bahama For Obama" campaign. He made posters like those seen above. These posters have been purchased by local Bahamians, American tourists, and tourists from all over the world. I AM THE DREAM Barack Obama's speeches were so powerful that Jamaal was reminded of clips he'd seen of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's speeches and it inspired me to create a drawing and a powerful slogan: "I Am The Dream." In Jamaal's words: When I watched a segment with the late Tim Russert on "Meet the Press" about Bobby Kennedy's 40 year prophecy, it was amazing to me. I've always had deep admiration for the Kennedy's. The 40-year journey form MLK's death to Obama achieving the highest U.S office shows that America is truly a land of great opportunities. As a 24-year old black entrepeneur, I am glad to be alive to witness this historic milestone. Jamaal has received very large cash offers for his original drawings. However, he says these prize possessions are not for sale. Rather, he plans to donate them to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Foundation.
